Whats eating Shred Baron?!

Right second blog in as many days this, blog-a-thon is going great! Today I’ll mostly be speaking about eating habits, mine specifically and how poor they were/are.

Last time I was weighed, I tipped the scales at 15st 10lbs. Myself and the other half have decided to make a smart choice for ourselves and for the future, were going to lose weight.

I could not tell you why my better half is determined to lose weight, but I can tell you why I want to! There are some personal issues that arise from my weight and I want rid of that, and for my own sake, I’m going to skip to what you guys are after.

I talked about losing weight so I could see if that makes me a better derby player and now I am writing this blog, It can be easier to track. I want to try this experiment to see how far I can push myself in my derby career.

I have realised there are certain ways that help lose weight, I had previously gone from around 20st to what I am now on will-power, then I plateaued and I want rid of the weight left, ten stone I want to be according to BMI that’s the higher end of the range for someone of miniature-esque stature.

I’ve started, eating more fruit and veg and unprocessed foods, microwave meals, pizzas, meat laden foods, massive portions, I’ve found that eating enough fruit and vegetables as a major portion of my meals has made me feel satiated longer. To be honest, I’ve not stopped snacking, right now I’m having a platter of Kiwi, apple and banana pieces (I love Kiwi). As I work near a major supermarket and their foods are there to buy with my money, I needed to make a smarter choices, I have had some gammon as well as a snack ( it was supposed to go in my salad (ooops) plain salad for me later then, and for my dinner before derby, I have got vegetarian chilli made with courgettes, peppers, sweet potatoes, onion and some others I can’t remember and jacket spud (carbs for the skating yo) for my dinner before derby.

But there gonna have to pry my zero calorie relentless from my cold dead hands.

I want to ask you guys if there is any favourite food you enjoy? What’s a meal that makes you happy? Anyone else have an experience with weight loss from derby? Please comment, I do read them, and try to respond as appropriate.

It smells in here.

OK so I’m going to TRY, like really, really try to post at least once a day about something, hopefully the majority being derby related, but sometimes I go off on a tangent.

Also over the next few days I wanna ‘spice’ up this blog make it look better, maybe look into adding in some photos, maybe (I’m probably over shooting here) get some videos together about the wonderful sport that is roller derby.

So here goes the start of this blog post marathon. It’s gonna be about kit stink! Yay! Every derby blogger I read has done a piece on this, so I guess it’s my time!

<Ahem>

Well as most derby players know and feel, they want to play derby, people tend to forget maintenance of all gear, not just the skates (there the fun part of the sport, I know).

The first will be derby stink, I was very, very unaware when is started, what, happens to your gear if you lock it up after a session in your bag and do not open that bad boy, its gonna fester into an un-godly stench, also, it’ll still be wet when you put it on next training. Urgh. I did this I felt awkward and disturbing.

There a few options is have found to combat this, and it means you don’t fall on the sofa or fall asleep after training, step one; take them out, place them on the floor, now they are in your way, you HAVE to do something with them now. I SEE, YOU DON’T PUT THEM BACK IN THE BAG, finish the job at hand!  I am lucky, I have a washing machine that has setting for light sportswear, so I use that, shove in a pillow case, done. Hang em out too dry done!

But if you don’t have a fancy washing machine and they are still on the floor, pick em up and follow these next steps, Hang em up, if you have a garden with one of those fancy drying lines, put them on there, Bonus if it’s sunny, the sun will kill the germs, also airing them out, that was easy.

I Seriously used to use odor eater spray. They are beautiful, in a pinch they can take that ‘Scrunch up your nose’ edge of the smell.

Another option is Bicarbonate of soda in your pads/bag over night (with the lid off) , then soak them in white vinegar and water, this will soak up some of the smell, then hang em up outside, outside is awesome.

Or for intensive derby stink that lingers on you days after practice, and will not, die.

This is your choice and I have not done this but I read this works, so I cannot be held responsible for anything that goes wrong.

Grab the kit, strap all Velcro down, throw them in a pillow case then into a Bowl with water and white vinegar. Once soaked for a while, grab the pillow case and use the lowest cycle you have on your washing machine with hot water, and a half cup of white vinegar including the softener and whatever the hell else goes into the washing machine. If it still smells, rinse and repeat (pun).

If the above doesn’t work, cast them into oblivion and buy new pads.

Do you guys have any other way of maintaining your kit? Is there anything that you’ve found that works and is cheap? Let me know in the comments below.

Ghosts of skate past and Present

I think A LOT about stuff and things and even sometimes important things. One important thing I have been thinking about was mine and my partners’ future. One of the main things I had thought about was the past and that seems counter-productive but stay with me on this.

The past.

But Shred, don’t think about the past, it is the past for a reason!

Whoa nelly, I’m not dredging up bad memories of school or anything really evil more it was, was about the changes that have happened since a few years ago and what I need to do to secure them for ourselves.

I firmly believe that we can gather strength from the past if we take a look at what was and what can be. In my case, for example;

I could not ever think about the future.. now I can and I am thinking ‘bout that future!

I could not stick with something for more than 5 minutes before I got bored…… I’ve been part of derby team for just over a year.

I could not save money or organise my bills…. I can and have been saving money, making smart choices.

I’d like to know what you guys think about this? If you sat back and thought about your past would be happy of where you’ve come? Or don’t think it has? It’d be nice if you would let me know in comments

Derby Drive

Derby Drive

We had ballistic Whistle the head coach of The men’s roller derby team train us this last Sunday, apart from being a thoroughly nice guy and a great coach, he taught me a few new things which I am thankful  for.

He asked a question to a few of the F.M.R.D members. It was a question that racked my brain.

‘Why do you play roller Derby?’

That’s a silly question I thought. I play because I like Roller derby.

But, in truth, it’s more than that, which I will explain, but bear with me.

On a personal note, I had some issues in my life, I had depression and was in a generally bad place I was a misery to be around, It seemed my lifes goal was to play world of Warcraft and generally mill about and be… Sad.

For around 8 years I had this attitude, an attitude that was toxic and it affected the people in my life.

Back to ten years ago when I got my first office Job, I met two very good friends who I still talk to too this day, they started Full Metal Roller Derby two years ago in which I was, nudged, cajoled and constantly asked when I’d join. In the hateful days of misery and why bother attitude I put it off, thinking I wouldn’t like it. Why bother? I’m not good at anything. I’ll fail.

I had broken thoughts and was a broken being but I was getting better as I had just met my wonderful better half and thought ‘Ok, this is a change and it was good’. I thought derby maybe something that would be good to.

And you know what?

I was right, to try. I am now a better person for it. I am not that weak child I was. I now have the drive to achieve. It gave me a sense of pride, it started as I couldn’t t-stop for toffee, weeks this happened I researched read, tried and tried each week until it happened. Then one day without thinking I popped a T-Stop, and the overwhelming sense rushed over me. I did Something  I was proud of. I fixed my sight on plough stops, and the ultimate goal derby stops. I can do these things.

I can do the things I set my mind to and I can do what I want to achieve this has leaked form my derby life to real life, I use this drive and skills to try and better myself and only time will tell what my life will be.

Cycling has opened my eyes

I have started cycling if the new bike post didn't get that across.

I have noticed that I live in a town that has the biggest network of bicycle tracks in my county, but the cycle tracks are all badly maintained. I cycled to work the other day and I had noticed that there is debris and other Miscellanea all over the tracks.

I wouldn't mind too much but I envision it will cause a problem in the long run. It's going to cost me something at some point, puncture repair, rim replacement etc.

I know my local council has a way to report the damages and issues, so I’m going to try their lovely fault reporting on their website to report the issues. I don’t want to be the guy that complains about these things, I promise I won’t try to get made about these issues and be 'that' guy at their offices people laugh at.

We'll see how this goes.
